W. James Meeks Dies in County
The Weekly Herald, Robersonville, NC, Wed., Dec 3, 1947
Critically ill for two months Mr. W. James MEEKS, prominent farmer of the county,
died at his home near Robersonville last Friday, November 28th. The last
surviving member of a large Martin County family, Mr. MEEKS was in ill health
for at least five years and most of that time he was confined to his bed.
Seventy–nine years old, Mr. MEEKS was born and reared near Robersonville. He
was a faithful member of the Free Will Baptist Church at Cedar Grove near the
home for at least 30 years. Funeral services were held from the home Sunday
afternoon at 2:30 with Rev. W. B. NOBLES of Winterville Free Will Baptist
Church and Rev. J. M. PERRY of the local Christian Church officiating.
Interment was in the family cemetery near the home. Surviving are two sons,
John D. MEEKS of Portsmouth, Va., Lester MEEKS of Robersonville; five
daughters, Mrs. R. C. GURGANUS of Williamston, Mrs. Luther TAYLOR of
Williamston, Mrs. F. A. NELSON of Raleigh, Mrs. Leslie SIMPSON of
Robersonville, and Miss Bessie MEEKS of the home.
