Funeral For Mrs. Effie James Leigh

Funeral services for Mrs. Effie JAMES LEIGH, 73, who died at the home of her daughter,
Mr. H. M. PHIFER, 703 West Fifth Street Sunday evening at 6 o’clock after two years
illness, were conducted at S. G. Wilkerson & Sons Funeral Home this afternoon at 3
o’clock by Rev. Ralph JOHNSON, Holiness minister of Greenville, assisted by Rev.
Leonard TOPPING, Presbyterian minister of Greenville. Burial was in Greenwood
Cemetery. Mrs. Leigh, daughter of the late M. A. and Laura BARNHILL, was born near
Bethel. She was married to Ed MAYO of Pitt County and he died in 1908. In 1912 she
was married to Calvin LEIGH of Edgecombe County, and he died in 1916. Mrs. LEIGH was
a member of Shiloh Methodist Church near Bethel, and lived in Greenville for 30
years. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Madie PIERCE and Mrs. H. M. PHIFER, both
of Greenville, and Mrs. C. B. MARSHBURN of Farmville; three sons, Fred L. MAYO of
Belvoir, Matt MAYO of Conetoe, and Tom Henry LEIGH of Norfolk, Va.; 13 grandchildren;
10 great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Mr. J. E. HAMMONDS and Miss Flossie JAMES,
both of Rocky Mount, and Mrs. Henry GURGANUS of Greenville.
